ANGKOR
by
David Stanford.
visited this amazing site in
2000 and took the pictures for this book but, due to other
commitments it was a number of years before the book
was put together. At
the time I was there it was still a dangerous place
with a lot of unexploded mines and evens pockets of Khmer Rouge still
haunting the more remote parts of the site. It has now been
totally cleared and is a world heritage site with thousands of
visitors each year. However, the sheer size of the place spread
over many many kilometres means that most tourists only visit
the central and easily accessible complex but there is far
more than that to be l seen . It is a fantastic place and was,
in the 12th Century, far bigger and more splendid than any
European City of the time. The incredible waterways and flood
plains used in its ground plan made it a precursor to anything
Venice had to offer. |
